EARLY CHILDHOOD SUMMER CAMP
This camp is intended for children ages 4 years old - 6 years old
Child must be 4 years old by June 1, 2026 to register
If your child will be entering first grade in the upcoming school year, we warmly invite you to sign them up for our Early Childhood camp. We welcome children who will be seven years old during camp, as it is a perfect opportunity for them to embrace the transition into the world of first grade with care.
Early Childhood camp is led by Sanderling faculty and teaching assistants. A camper’s day will begin outside with open free play and crafting then move inside for snack, circle, rest, inside play, and story. The children will engage in a variety of activities: baking, painting, sewing, and gardening. The children will have a balance of free play and focused activities with time in the wonder of nature.

We ask that each child bring:
A healthy lunch held in a basket with two napkins. One will be used for a place mat and the other as needed. We ask that lunches are low sugar and packed in reusable containers
Water bottle labeled with child’s name
Sun hat that easily stays on child’s head through activity
A bag of extra clothing: underwear, socks, pants, and shirts (all labeled)
Inside shoes or slippers that children can change into from outside play. The preference would be soft shoes/slippers that are comfortable and will easily stay on child’s feet
Sunscreen. Please put sunscreen on your child before they arrive

WHAT TO BRING TO CAMP:
Food
Please bring a snack, lunch, water bottle, and a backpack. We ask that our families do their best to provide students with healthy food that can fuel them for the day. Please no sweets or sugary treats for snack or lunch.
Clothing
Please dress your child in clothes suited for varied activities and weather conditions. We strive to create an environment that allows the children to play freely without distractions. School clothing, backpacks and lunch baskets should be free of slogans, cartoons, logos, commercial advertising, and caricatures. Children wearing short dresses need to wear shorts or leggings underneath so they can freely climb, run and jump. Please choose shoes that work well for running on uneven terrain. Shoes with closed toes and backs that are sturdy are requested. Flip flop sandals or shoes with heels or flashing lights are not allowed. Please leave wristwatches and all jewelry at home. Please apply sunscreen on your child before they arrive for the day and have them wear a hat. Lastly, please pack an extra change of clothes in your child's backpack just in case it is needed.
GRADES CAMP DETAILS
WEEK 1 : UBUNTU with Mr. Mashobane
Our experienced instructor, Mr. Mashobane Moruthane, has crafted a fun-filled program that will keep your child engaged, active, and inspired. Daily activities include rhythmical exercises like drumming, stick drumming, and gumboots dancing, as well as games and team-building challenges, circus skills training, gardening, outdoor exploration, and artistic expression.
This will allow them to develop new skills, build lasting friendships, and take home unforgettable memories. Mr. Moruthane will be joined by a fun-loving and active assistant, ensuring a supportive and energetic environment for all participants.
The camp culminates in an exciting presentation featuring African drumming performances, circus acts, and an art exhibit.

Note: if we have more than 15 children, we will divide the children into two groups according to their age to have a younger group and an older group.
WEEK 2 & 3 : HANDWORK with Ms. Priscilla
WEEK 2 & WEEK 3: Handwork camp with Ms. Priscilla will have children working with their hands developing fine motor skills, persistence, perseverance, and strengthens related brain functions. The children explore the magic of color, texture and natural fibers through nature-inspired weaving, knitting and/or crochet, embroidery, and fine art projects. Skills and techniques will range based on students’ age and abilities.
WEEK 4 & 5 : ART & HANDWORK with Mr. Nik & Ms. Grace
Mr. Nik will host the children for art, stories and games then Ms. Grace (a teacher from Friends of Willow Tree) will lead the children for handwork, stories and lunch rhythm. Step into a world of wonder this summer where artistic imagination meets handwork! Our Enchanted Art and Handwork Camp invites young artists to explore nature, creativity, and playful movement in a magical setting. Each day will be split in two parts with lunch being in the middle. Mr. Nik will have half of the children and Ms. Grace will have the other half of the children for then after lunch the children will switch groups so they all experience the same amount of fun.
WEEK 4:
Art with Mr. Nik - Each child will craft their own whimsical fairy house, painting and decorating it to reflect their unique style. Once the fairy houses are complete, campers will create tiny magical creatures and spirit animals out of clay to inhabit their enchanted homes. They'll bring their imaginations to life with air dry clay. Together, we'll weave a group story about the magical world we've created, inspiring children to dream up their own fairy-tale adventures. We will also read fairy stories and magical tales.
Fiber Arts & The Elements with Ms. Grace - We will explore Earths elements through the art of handwork. Each day will focus on a particular element, inspiring projects that reflect its qualities and gifts. Children will engage in a variety of fiber arts, including hand sewing, weaving, felting, and other tactile crafts. Through story, rhythm, and creating, we will discover how the elements live both in nature and in our creative work.
WEEK 5:
Art with Mr. Nik - Each child will create their own castle, painting and decorating it to reflect their unique style. Once the castles are complete, campers will create tiny magical creatures out of clay to inhabit their enchanted castles. They'll bring their imaginations to life with air dry clay. Together, we'll weave a group story about the magical world we've created, inspiring children to dream up their own castle adventures.
Nature & Handwork with Ms. Grace - We will turn our attention and skills toward the gifts of the natural world. Our projects will incorporate natural materials to create both beautiful and functional pieces. As students continue to build their abilities in hand sewing, weaving, felting, and other fiber arts, they will deepen not only their craftsmanship, but also their connection to the living world around them.

WEEK 6 : STRINGS a Sanderling Waldorf Specialty Subject
STRINGS CAMP REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE:
Experience level and ages: Open to violin, viola, cello, and bass players with at least one school year of strings experience. For rising 5th through graduating 8th graders.
Join us for a joyful week of instrumental music at Strings Summer Camp. Led by violinist and educator Lara Heck, students will spend the week exploring the art of playing music together while building confidence, musical skills, and friendships.
Throughout the week, students will participate in lively rhythm and movement games, develop listening and ensemble awareness, and collaborate to create an original class composition. Campers will explore new repertoire that expands their music-reading abilities while strengthening tone, rhythm, and musical expression. Creative activities, including designing and tie-dying camp shirts, will round out the week with some hands-on artistic elements.
Ms. Lara will be joined by another experienced musician who will help guide activities and support students throughout the week, creating a warm and encouraging musical environment.
Students should bring their own instrument (or rented instrument). The camp is open to both Sanderling students and musicians from the wider community, provided they meet the experience requirements.
The week concludes with a short performance for families, where students will share the music they have learned and the piece they composed together.
